Have you tried enabling the MSI verbose logging so we can look to find where the failure occurs? Use the following to create verbose logging:. Do you have any other Norton products installed on this machine?
It looks like the installer is using InstallShield to call msiexec and pass installation parameters at the command line. I might be able to reproduce the error using the command prompt and narrow down the discrepancy. I have narrowed the problem down to be related to disabling NTFS 8. See KB This was done on a hunch and was proven by creating two new users, one with NTFS 8. Only the one with NTFS 8. I am guessing that the installer is either using environment variables in such a way that is causing problems with long file names or that the parameters passed to msiexec contain spaces where NTFS 8.
So, we still need to figure out how to back this user out of whatever hole having NTFS 8. This most probably has to do with the calling of some temporary files that the installer is extracting and then attempting to pass to msiexec.
SInce the temp folders specific to this user were created when the user first logged in, those folders do not have NTFS 8. Try disabling 8. This is only a problem with older installers and 16 bit applications and can be fixed with a re-write of the installer itself hint hint. Back to top. Noxious Regular Visitor 3. Do not send a copy of your credit card statement. Note that on my reading this procedure applies when you buy the product from someone else as well as from Symantec so it's the best route to follow unless your supplier does do a full refund which is unlikely on software. There actually are quite a number of online retailers who offer full refunds on software products and most require certification that the software has been removed from the computer. In fact I have typically found it easier depending on the company overall to get refunds on downloaded software than it is for the typical software CD package. I believe the reason for this is because downloaded software typically generates a license based on user supplied data such as email address, etc instead of a pre-packaged product which has a static license key.
This is the reason most stores will not accept software packages for refund, because if the person is not honest and still leaves that software installed and then the store resells the software, now you have a duplicate license and the second user would be the first one suspected of piracy. Being a software engineer I can see where downloaded products are likely to be more secure in terms of minimizing risks of piracy.
My two cents worth. Norton's warranty is absolute provided you meet the terms of it so in general I would prefer to use that and not have to discuss the matter. Yes I know what you mean. But I just needed to mention that because if Rocco did purchase a download version, Symantec may not honor it but the retailer very well might. These days more and more online retailers are starting to offer fully functional trial periods but many still do have either no trial or limited functionality trials, in which case knowing if you can refund the software it if does not work for you is of paramount importance.
